Mike -- You can have a pretty effective cat-back exhaust system fabricated at your local muffler shop -- Meineke or Midas, etc. Just find one with an adventurous pipebender who likes a challenge -- I'm near one run by an old-time hot rodder who loves the odd, out-of-the-ordinary job. Have him bend you a 2 1/2" low-restriction system, eliminate the two right-angle bends in the rear, and add a free-flow muffler. Add a fancy exhaust tip if you absolutely must; my preference is an unadorned straight pipe. Such a system ought to run $200, at most.

Don't go to Midas. Go to a locally owned muffler shop. I was quoted for a cat on back for my '84 240DL of $80. They do a great job without you helping to pay for national advertizing.
