Rattling Calipers - revisited, Hammer Time![ALL/1988] posted by Ed Lipe on

CAN'T TRUST THIS... HAMMER TIME.
We've talked a lot in the past 'bout the rattling calipers on the 700 series cars. You'd think you could trust the info printed on the Mfg. Spec stickers attached to the car. You know the ones, The info you're supposed to use when buying parts for the car. We talked about the rattling and different ways to fix it, but we didn't speak of the two brands of calipers available. By The Book! Code #2, refering to brakes, indicates Girling fronts and ATE on the rear. Code #3 should mean that DBA (Bindix) is affixed to the front and ATE's to the rear. DUH!
My car says 3 when it should have been 2.
Just because you have a Bible doesn't mean it's Gospel.
The Girlings have a weak, "hair pin" spring attached by a rivit to the top of the pad to curb the rattle.
The DBA's have a spring clip that pushes on the top of the pads and is held down by the retaining pins on top of the caliper.
You think you know what you've got when you go to the parts counter to get what you need. I go in looking for pads for the DBA's when what I really need is pads to fit the Girlings. You come away thinking: Why is it so hard to get brake pads?
And the parts guy is thinking: What an a#$hole.
Why? Is this what I have to endure for owning a bastard vehicle?
That's just my opinion... of course, I may be wrong.
Of course, your milage may vary.... ED7
