Poor radio reception[ALL/1988] posted by K Burckley on

I recently purchased an 89 740GL sedan. The radio reception is very poor -only 1 local AM station and a few local FM stations. My mechanic suggested installing a new radio, however, when the automatic antenna is disconnected (in the back at the motor) and another antenna is attached, the reception improves dramatically. It looks like installing a new, fixed antenna will really help, but from what I've read and been told it sounds like the radio used in the 89 740 is not very good. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced the same problem and what solution they used. Also, is it just better to replace the radio?
