CD Changer[ALL/1988] posted by Ng Koh Wee on

Hi everyone,

I need some help on the correct CD changer to purchase for my second hand Volvo 940 Turbo. This car was manufactured in 1994. It came without the CD-changer and I am having difficulty figuring out which Alpine CD changer I should use.

The head unit is of the model number CD-401. Someone told me I should be using the Alpine 6 series of CD Changer, but this series has two principle models--601 and 604. Apparently they are quite different. Also looking at the socket, it is clear I need a converter of sorts whether it is for one or the other model.

Could someone please advise which model of CD-changer I should purchase and wher I could get a suitable converter.

Your help is much appreciated.

I think the 601 is the unit you want and if you search the archives there were several post about just which adapter cable works the best. The 604 is an AI unit and won't work.

Stinger/PPI makes a changer adapter cable so try them at the link below, they can also steer you to a dealer that stocks the cable in your area.

Definitely try the S601. 604 definitely won't work as mentioned by Stoney. I used 601 with IPD adapter cable connected to SC710 radio in my 855. It works fine.

I wouldn't say that the 604 definitly wouldn't work, because I have a 604 in my glove box ( I also have a '97 850 R not a 940). It requires one more adapter.
The reason why I got the 604 is becasue I plan on removing my factory head unit and replace it with the Alpine Ai Net navigaton system (when I have the spare money) - and I wanted it to control the CD changer.

If you are not planning on removing the original head unit in the future and replace it with an Alpine product (Ai Net) then I don't suggest getting the 604, but rather the 601.

Good luck

I noticed that the original poster was from Singapore (.sg in his email address) and the model he mentioned CD401 is not a N. American model-I e'd him off the board and advised him to contact PPI direct with model number as they should be able to let him know if they can supply an adapter.

Does anyone know if the cd-401 is an Alpine based head unit? are we sttering this guy into a tree? will his airbag work? do they have airbags in singapore?

Anyway if anyone knows the specs on the head unit and if it's an Alpine based head unit, please post and set us straight or whatever....

I just hate giving the guy a bum steer!

Please try the below link to see what is possible and what is not using the Alpine 6 Disk Cd player 601 or 604. The adaptor is the most important unit in order to mak the Radio/cassette unit function with the Alpine 6 CD disk unit.

Good luck in your search!
