`82 245 GL- hard rear suspension[ALL/1988] posted by richard g. on

Last Spring I "lucked" into a `82 245 with a great body and it`s strong "runner"as well. However, the one thing that really bothers me is it`s seemingly stiff rear suspension which delivers a real "jolt" whenever I drive over railroad tracks or you name it! The previous owner had told me that he`d had some rear suspension work done including bushings and heavy duty springs, later confirmed by a mechanic. My question is this: is this rough ride a result of the the springs or do my rear shocks need to be replaced? The shocks seem to be O.K. by the usual test but maybe there is another factor involved. .Any suggestions/ideas greatly appreciated. Richard G.

Hey if ya got it in NYC and it's Blue, blue interior and has ipd bars and ipd overload coils it could be my old one! She answers to the name "Helga" and she likes 89 octane and 10w40!

165,000 miles, ate taxicabs for lunch and had the aux. cooling fan installed!

e me if ya think it's her! I'd like to think she found a good home!

Sorry, Stoney but my 245 is from here in southern Alberta tho` it`s originally from the west coast of Canada. It`s got 240,000 miles on it but going strong. It gets really regular oil changes, maybe more often than necessary but oil and filters are relatively cheap.Hope your 245 found a good home, I wouldn`t mind those IPD sway bars, maybe I`ll upgrade this summer. Are they really that good? I know everybody raves about them but I`m sceptical by nature, MEANWHILE, back to my bone-jarring rear suspension problem.

Richard,

Actually the rear overload springs will give the rear the tendency to
"bang" on a good bump. They slam down hard, right? Theis is normal when
the vehicle is unloaded or lightly loaded as the spring rate is set for
1000Lbs + and when there is nothing to load the springs then they can
smack down pretty hard.

Also check the frame rubber bumpers, small cone shaped bumbers attached
to the frame above the axle, these act as additional bumbers if the axle
gets too close to the frame. If they are torn or sheared off, seen this
a few times, then they would account for the bang.

BTW Your email address "bounced" back-
Jarrod doesn't like this and you risk having youself dropped as bounced mail clogs his mailbox-see note below the opening header.

Thanks, Stoney. I`ll check those rubber bumpers when my wife gets home from work. I`m getting the feeling that I may have to live with this "problem".
