Help!! Need to drive my 850 in the morning[ALL/1988] posted by Paul Wallace on

I'm changed oil on my 93 850 this afternoon and serviced it with 5 qts of Mobil synthetic 10w 30 weight oil. In addition I installed a Mann oil filter. When I started the engine to leak check the filter the oil pressure light went out as expected and the "Oil Level Low" light stayed on. I have never had a problem with this light before and I wanted to see if it was safe to drive the car with this light on?
I assume this is just indicator light and for some reason it thinks the oil quanity is low. Dip stick does show about one half qt. from full mark, but well above the add mark. Will Light come on between add and full? Or have I got a problem with the system? Any insigh would be appreciated.

Thanks

Paul Wallace

Paul,

Your engine takes close to 6 quarts of oil. (5.3 liters) The low oil level light is very sensitive. You just need to add a little more oil.

I always have avoided the appearances of these warning lights, but making sure to fill my filter before installation. Filter takes about.3 qt, so total amount is about 5.6 qt, and I've used closer to 6, although 5.6 should bring it to almost the full line, when all the oil has dripped into the bottom of the pan...At that time, you will not see any lights.

Thanks for the response everybody. I went back to the store today and purchased more oil ( I only had 5 qts. when I initially serviced the system) and brought the level up to the full mark and the light went out. I am suprised that the light will come on when level is only about a half a qt. from the full mark. I would have expected it to come on at the add mark. Well I learned something !!

Thanks Again
Paul Wallace
