Engine Detailing for 850[ALL/1988] posted by Mark on

I know that engines can generally be detailed by covering the electrical components, then spraying a product like simple green, and using a hose or pressure washer to clean it up. I even heard that you can spray a product like son of a gun protectant and let it soak up on the engine after that.
Anyway, my question is what do you use to remove the engine coating? The coating on my engine is starting to come off and looks like patchy scotch tape residue or something like that. I talked to a professional detailer who said he usually removes the coating, but he didn't tell me what he used to do it. Does any one know? Thanks.

A word of caution about the spray applied to the engine after you get the old stuff off.DONT USE ANYTHING SILICON BASED,ie armour-all sun-of-a-gun etc etc.
I have been told that it can cause alot of problems with electronic cicuits and sensors. And develop poor signal transmission etc etc.

I use a citrus based product like "Goo Gone" and alos the Castrol spray degreaser, be sure to remove and or disconnect/cover /wrap with saran wrap all electrical stuff. Use a nylon bristle brush and baby bottle brush, avoid anything with a particulate scrubber in it as this will give you many nice small scratches in teh aluminum parts. Also check the type of cleaner as some is not "aluminum friendly" and will leave a whitish residue after a rinse off.
Also e sure to clean the underside of the hood as the areas behing the internal bracing can hold lots of crud and provide a nice home for the rust gremlins.

I have successfully and safely used Espree's (green) Wheel Magic. I used to be able to get it by the gallon at Price Club/Costco, but the manufacturer no longer manufacturers it in that size.
I spoke to one of the chemists at a previous SEMA show on Las Vegas, and asked about what harm -- if any -- would/could come from using it under the hood. He was pleased to learn of my positive experience with the product, and assured me that the cleaner would not have any detrimental effect on anything -- materials, electrical connections, etc. -- on or near the engine.
But...
Recently, I cleaned our '94 850 with 75,000 miles, and afterwards it would run like an old beater. It fely like cylinders were being individually switched off at random. While it never quit altogether, it was a nervous drive in the mean time. Sometimes, though, it acted perfectly.
I ended up changing spark plug cables, distributor cap and rotor, and now all is well. Perhaps the moisture exacerbated cross fire at the old plug leads.
Anyway, I continue to use Wheel Magic, now available in 5 gallon containers. I pour it into a stainless steel garden sprayer, to which I attached a 12 foot length of air compressor hose extension. Just a few pumps of the handle and it sprays a nice stream without continuous hand-squeeze pumping.
Hope this helps. Good luck!

Oh, is THAT what that stuff is? Just yesterday, I was using some simple green, a toothbrush, some rags, and a spray bottle of water to spruce up the engine in my 854T. And I noticed this orange-ish sticky stuff in a few nooks and crannies, which was a bear to get out. Using a screwdriver blade and simple green helped, and there's not much left, but if you want out how to deal with it, post it here...What is that stuff used for anyway?

I think you are referring to the cosmolene that many overseas manufacturers use to protect the engine (especially from the sea air) before shipping. The dealer is supposed to remove this as part of the prep, but they never quite get it all. Any good degreaser and a little elbow grease should remove it.
BTW: Cosmolene has been used for years. I remember some years back when the government sold a lot of Willy's Jeeps manufactured during WWII but never assembled. All the parts were packed in 50 gal. drums of cosmolene.
