The automatic transmission in my 1979 244 has had a problem since we purchased it about 2 years ago. It had a delayed shift from 2 to 3 and I would have to let off on the gas for it to shift. Once it shifted everything was normal. The shift handle and downshift cable are both properly adjusted. About a month ago I changed the trans fluid and filter by draining the pan so only about half the fluid got changed. Now the transmission basically won't shift from 2 to 3 at all. If it does upshift it will downshift almost immediately when you push on the gas pedal. Also you have to rev the engine up to get it to shift to reverse. 1 and 2 and the 1 to 2 upshift are normal. When the transmission is cold everything works normally. I have since completely flushed the fluid but it didn't help. Any ideas?
Assuming a major repair (read expensive) is required, I have considered finding a good used transmission. The existing trans is an AW55. Will other models, i.e. BW55, AW70, AW71 fit?
