I want to put seat covers on the front seats of my 1976 Volvo 245. I want to remove the head rest before installing them but can't figure out how to get the head rests off. They appear to be mounted to the seat backs by chrome plated rods which fit into plastic bushings. Is there a way to release them so they will slide off.

Rick, get in the back seat, raise the head stopper thingey to the top. Follow the line of the rods down the back 'bout 1 1/2" - 2". Pushing with your thumb against the upholstery, you'll find a lever that will release the rods. It's in there a ways. Slight resistance upward while you're probing and you'll get it. ED7

Ed,
Thanks for the quick response. I tried your suggestion but don't seem to be able to find the headrest release. You mentioned "raise the head stopper thingey to the top". I assume you are talking about the headrest. Mine do not move up or down. They look like a tapered ladder and don't seem to move. Any other ideas. What am I missing?
Thanks again.

The headrest has about 11/2"- 2" upward adjust. Gotta pull or push it up to the stop before the release will do its thing. Try it again, could be gummed up a bit.

Ed,
I finally got it. The headrests did not move until I found the releases but they did come out. The key seems to be releasing and lifting both rods at the same time so that the headrest doesn't get in a bind. It would probably be easier with two people. Thanks for the help. Rich

Richard, to change the subject, have you checked your lumbar supports? Most 240's of this vintage that I have seen have broken or missing lumbar supports. This would be a good time to fix them - before you install the seat covers. I you need to replace them you will have to raise the old seat covers, which will also make it easier to find the headrest release latches.
To see if the lumbar supports are broken, tighten the knob on the side of the seat. If the knob encounters resistence and the seat back gets firmer the lumbar support is working. If not, I highly recommend fixing it. Makes a tremendous difference in seat comfort.

Checking the lumbar supports is a good idea. I know IPD sells the kits for $24.95. The instructions would have probably told me how to get the headrest off as well. Thanks. Rich
