I have a 1985 240dl wagon with a rattle coming from the rear hatch door but I
absolutely can't figure out how to get rid of it or figure out exactly where it is coming from . So far I can only make it stop by sitting in the back and pressing on it with my feet as hard as I can.... hard to drive from that position, though. Can anyone help???

There is a rubber grommet (basically a square pad) between the tailgate and the floor that acts as a cushion. Funny, I can't remember whether they are attached to the floor or the tailgate. Anyway, you might check to see those are intact. I believe there are other grommets along the side, but don't recall. Just look to see that whatever appears on one side, also appears on the other. You might also have a loose latch or hinge thats getting bad, but look for the little things first! Good luck.

My rear gate rattled as described, I pulled back the head liner and tightened the rear gate hinges, rattle stoped... Try it.

This may sound weird but make sure the rear license plate and possibly the metal frame that holds the plate or even the bracket is TIGHT. I have a 1997 245DL as well and the rear license plate rattles.......... mr. tool....

I wondered who stole all those spare parts from the Torslanda warehouse!

That would explain a rattle, but I have difficulty envisioning Shirley being able to stop a bracket rattle by pressing outwards on the tailgate...I stick with my first theory. Those rubber bumpers can disappear without you ever noticing until the whole tailgate reacts.
I also recall an adjustment being made to the lock latch (U-shaped) that sits on the floor of the car, or just plain tightened it, but my memory apparently is failing too.

This sounds like the same problem I had. One question: does the luggage area light come on when you hit a bump and it is on 'door' setting?
If this happens then Shatz was right and the rubber bumpers are missing or require adjusting: very simple.
They are situated on either side of the tailgate about 12 inches from the bottom. To adjust loosen the screws and move the blocks towards the inside of the car, check that the tailgate closes properly and you are done. Also check the bar that the door latch engages (on floor just inside luggage compartment) and tighten if necessary.
The other thing it could be is the interior panal obn the tailgate (the little catch things wear trhu and it will rattle) I fixed mine temporarily 3 months ago with think double sided tape.
