Hello-
1990 740 wagon. Want to replace stereo with a new one. Any hints on removing the radio and reconnecting. I can't seem to find the magic to get the thing out.
Thanks.
vic

See if there are two little rectangular scribes on either side of the face. Push in with a fingernail and release quickly. On my car they become finger pulls. If not I doubt if they are held in by other than friction. You may have to remove the plastic trim around the toggle switches, it just snaps off.
Just a couple of thoughts.

If your radio has round knobs, pull the knobs off. There will be a metal tang just to the outside of each knob just under the faceplate. Take two pocket screwdrivers and pull these tangs toward the center of the radio and pull the radio out. You may have to use yout teeth since humans normally don't have three hands.

Would anyone know the wiring scheme for the stock volvo head unit including the amp out? I'm trying to install another radio & the bently book doesnt cover radios. TIA James J.

I put a high-end AM/FM/CD unit in the wife's '89 744GL two months ago. The hardest part was tying in the four speakers to the new unit. I junked the Volvo amp (found under the dash to the left of the steering column) and wiring from same to the old Volvo radio. Key is matching up all the speaker leads. Haynes lists the leads as follows: LF speaker leads are white & yellow with white stripe; RF speaker leads are grey & yellow with grey stripe; LR speaker leads are brown & yellow with brown stripe; and, RR speaker leads are black & yellow with black stripe. The leads with the stipe are positive, the solid-color leads are negative. Not trusting a British manual when it comes to electrical systems (too many bad experiences with Lucas, Prince of Darkness, in the past), I first hooked up the ground, power, and power antenna leads (black, red & green) to the unit. Then I double-checked each speaker in the car by temporarily twisting their leads to the unit's respective speaker leads -- keeping the Volvo wiring's striped wires connected to the unit's positive speaker wire leads. The most time-consuming work was hand-trimming the unit's trim surround to the sloped "wings" in the Volvo's dash next to the radio location...

The Volvo speaker amp must be pretty feable (20 watts total?), because the new unit (4 x 35 watts) is very strong -- even more powerful than the factory 200-watt unit in my 960. I think you will be very happy with your new unit with a little patience in your wiring set-up.

Good luck.

Re: new stereo wiring?/std radio din socket pin outs for amp[ALL/1988] posted by Stoney on

OK Took my amp apart and here are the pin outs for the HA4111 amp-

Looking at the DIN plug w/ keyway as 6 O'Clock position and working clockwise from 5pm position
Pin6 Center Shield/ground
Pin5 Left Rear
Pin4 Amp Trigger on/off
Pin3 Right Rear
Pin2 Right Front
Pin1 Left Front

So if ya wanna put an aftermarket amp in your brick I suffest you buy 4 RCA cables and bare the ends and solder them in the above pattern to a 6 pin din connector. The center pin can be a single wire to be the amp trigger.

I agree w/ Lee that the amp ain't a whole lot but the std. cr-712 series has like 7 watts output with out an amp and the fader doesn't work with out an amp.

There is also a chassis ground from the amp body to the radio body.

Are the speakers connected directly to the stock amp? Or, can I ignore all that wiring and connect to the wiring that comes out of the dash, as I will install a unit w/a built in power amp. I'd just assume leave the pwr amp behind the dash as I don't want to disassemble the whole thang.

If it's a stock 240 w/ the std. radio and amp-

Unplug the radio, pull out the harness and unplug the next connector looks just tlike the first one, that is amp power input and front speaker output, look for small black or brown 4 wire connector, thats rear speakers, unplug it then unplug DIN cable from rear of radio and disconnect the ground wire from rear of radio, unplug the antenna.

Get a Volvo harness adapter, $30 and solder it to the new radio harness, using old radio harness as guide, sacrifice the 4 pin speaker plug from Amp and solder it to the rear speaker output of new radio. Plug 2 big connectords together, 2 small connectors together, if there is small 2 pin connector going to rleft side of the radio that is the illumination wire so tap onto it w/ a scothch lock and plug in antenna, install new unit in dash. your'e done.

You will need:

Faceplate kit for upper dash or lower dash Metra turbokit is good deal has all the stuff ya need Part # 99-9222
Harness adapter Metra part # 70-1119

have fun!
