Leaking clutch master cylinder[ALL/1988] posted by Roger Sundelin on

I have a leaking clutch master cylinder in my 740 -90. Can I get away with just
changing the seals or do I have to replace the whole thing? I was allready
adviced to change the whole cylinder, but here in Finland they are quit expensive
items, over 200$.Another problem is that when Iīm releasing the clutch pedal
thereīs this terrible sqeeking sound, like Iīve been driving over the neighbours
cat! Is it the release bearring, or could it be something else. The car has been
driven 208.000 km, and I donīt know if the clutch has been replaced.

You just don't know till you look. If, After taking it out and taken it apart, The bore is smooth and clean; then you can get a seal kit for it. If the bore has more than just a wave in it, then a complete cylinder is in order.
Does the clutch make that sound when you push the pedal in?
Does it make that sound when the clutch is just starting to engage?
If you hear it at the point of engagement, then the noise is coming from the clutch
itself. If it happens while you're holding down the pedal then it's the throwout bearing.
Do you notice slippage while accelerating?

Sounds like you're down to rivits maybe. Shove it into 2nd or 3rd and try to take off. You'll know if it's slipping or not. If no slip, then you might have some glazing with possibly some warping. Does it shudder slightly when you take off? If no slip, then it's slight glazing. Just do a couple of hole shots and see what happens.
If the master bore has no pitting it should be OK to put in just a seal kit. I've had cylinders sleeved with stainless steel for $60US. It could also be the slave cylinder. I'd start at the top and work my way down. ED7

I have seen a lot of the pedal pivots make a squeak when the pedal is moved. A shopt of strategically placed lube works wonders.

If you're in Helsinki, stop by at Volvo Racing Team "Autoengineering/Matti Jarvinen". He'll solve your problem faster than your Win95 will warm up.
