Windshield wiper relay with a memory[ALL/1988] posted by Shatz on

In my latest issue of the IPD newsletter, they advertise a replacement relay for your wipers that allows you to "program" in a wipe interval that is different than the intermittent interval used by Volvo. As I understand it, you have to set it by turning the wiper on, then off and it remembers the time between this. It will continue to wipe at this intermittent interval until you turn it off or reset it.

As an alternative to a continuous interval stalk or one with several settings, this seems like it might fill the gap that is lacking in my Volvo (92/960). Does anyone have any experience with the relay, or comments?

I'v heard other Bricksters extol their virtues. It seems a little pricy to me.

Have the relay in my 855T for the last 4 months or so. It works great, much easier to do than explain. It ends up being very intuitive. Turn the wipers on, turn them off, wait until You need them again and turn them on and forget them.

Well put Bill. I have the relay on our V70 and feel it was a worthwhile expense.
It was very easy to install and the clicking sound is very minimal and is not noticeable with the radio on.

Which relay under the dash is it? Is it clearly marked? I was looking at the IPD relay but am turned off by all the switching I would have to do to switch the interval. I'm hoping if the relay is a standard plug I'll just make my own using a potientemeter to control the interval.

thanks

Hi Pat,

It is the second relay located in the top left of the relay board. It doesn't marked as a wiper-relay. As far as I can remember, it was marked as 203 on the top of the relay. I am not sure about that whether the pin-out of this relay is a standard one. You have to figure it out yourself.

Anyway, I used the IPD wiper-relay for more than 4 months, I like it very much.

Bill, I understand that the relay simply plugs in on the 855T, but could it be used on the 1800ES. In Seattle, wipers are important, however, I would sacrifice my high-speed mode for an intermittent mode. If it ever rains so hard that I need the high-speed, I'll just pull over and row home. Would it be possible with a little ingenuity to install the relay so that the normal slow speed on the 1800ES rocker switch would be for setting the time delay and the high-speed mode would be re-wired for the low constant on? I am looking for a way to put in a wiper delay without the usual under-dash control mechanism (and more complex wiring requirement). From what I remember on the ipd picture, the relay has only three contacts. How difficult can it be?

I just put one of these in my 850 over the weekend and there were way more than three contacts on it. There were either 5 or 6 as I recall. I kept the stock relay, so I can check it for the real number if you want.

As I recall the 850 relay has contacts oriented in various different directions. I don't think it would work with the 1800. In addition it takes what is already a delay system (set for an unchanging 6 seconds) and makes it infinitely variable up to 21.5 seconds. Some one who knows more about electrical circuits and timing delay systems than me will have to answer this one.

Folks:

I'm wondering if the programmable relay isn't one of IPD's typical attempts to gouge people when selling Euro parts (eg the windshield rain deflectors and turn signals, which can be MUCH cheaper from a good Volvo dealer).

WolfSport sells a similar relay for VWs and Audis for $30 (vs. IPD's $68). The person on the phone read a European Bosch part number which I don't have handy. I'm not finished checking with Volvo, but I assume that Hella or Bosch is probably the OEM for this part, and that IPD just slaps its sticker on the relay. My guess is that it can be gotten for $25 or less, maybe much less.

If anyone has bought the IPD relay and not installed it yet, please take a close look at it and post the maker and OEM part number which should be stamped on the relay.

Thanks,

Greg

Me too!

I have seen this ad in Euro car and wondered if their unit would work on the 850.

So thanks for posting this and calling WolfSport!! Great people inhabit da BRICKBOARD.

OK guys - climb under your dash and rattle off that "wiper delay for the 850" part number and any other info. I'll send you a beer.

I'll take a case.

PS- I was going to fashion my own rain deflector so I better do it BEFORE the case of beer gets here!

Dick,

I said "a beer" and that doesn't look like a Bosch part number!!!

Your dreaming,

Paul S.

PS Your Volvo (required reference) needs a comsic ray deflector with a memory.

Just received a new IPD newslettter with their memory relay advertised. It explicitly says it is for 850 and 70's model only. I have not called to press them on it, but this is very disappointing. I'd really like to get one for the 960. I'll let you know.

I ordered one from I.P.D., for my 850 Turbo. The markings opposite of the prongs have been scraped off. The only numbers are on the side.
They read "3797". Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Had it for several months. As Bill says, it is easier to use than to explain. I put about 2500 miles a month in often rainy Atlanta, and it has been a great upgrade for me! If you are very sensitive to noises, please note that you will hear a faint click with each wiper pass if your stereo is off.

Thanks for all the input. I will put that on my "want" list from IPD.

Has anyone put this into a 960/S90? The IPD catalog says for 850/S70 only.

I just put one into my 850 over the weekend and if I remember correctly, the documentation that came with the relay said it was also for 960's. You might want to give IPD a yell to make sure, but I'm pretty sure that's what it said. By the way, IPD also furnishes some good installation instructions with the relay. They were wrong on the size socket needed to remove the knee bolster, but that's not exactly a big problem.
