I had the same problem finding the right Bosch plug and I refused to spend
$45.00 at the dealer. I installed the Bosch FR7DP in the 855T5R -- Three
weeks later I was experiencing starting problems. I replaced them with the
copper equivalent (FR7DC) and I've had no problems since. In my
neighborhood every other car is a Volvo 850, yet these plugs are a big pain
to obtain -- no one had them (Trak Auto, Auto Zone, Pep Boys, you name it)
-- I had to special orde them. I think they also have a Champion
available, which is mentioned in the manual.

Hi Vince, I've determined that the Bosch FR7DC are the correct plugs for the 850s...IPD, for one, sells this plug for this application, as does TrollHattan. Both can supply you with the plug..IPD's price is just $1.85/ea. But I've even done better...I found 1 local Napa dealer who got me a set overnight for, get this, $1.00 ea! I've been unable to find out who makes the Dealer plugs, but I can tell you that in the Volvo Service lit, they say to use either their own Kit #, or the Champion equivalent which they give as #RC 7 GYC..Unfortunately, this plug is not avaiable here, or is no longer made...Anyhow, it looks like you found the correct Bosch plug to use...I've heard, as your experience bares out, that the platinums just dont work in this car...I dont know why but that's how it is.

I have found an AC Delco Rapid Fire plug that works in the 850 / S70 T5. I am not at home right now so I cannot look at the box to tell you the number. Call the AC Delco help number for the number. The phone number for AC Delco is available at the acdelco.com site.

I really like these plugs. They resist fouling and according to studies conducted at a university (Michigan I think) the plugs give better mileage and a small increase in power. I use these plugs in both my S70 T5 and my highly modified Mitsubishi Eclipse (running 17 lbs of boost, 3" exhaust and probably around 275+ hp). These plugs have worked well, run clean, and lasted a long time. They do cost about $4 each however.

Thanks, Ira, its good to know of another plug which works well in this application. I just picked up my Boschs yesterday..Frankly, I was amazed that they were only $1 each, but as long as they are the right plug for this car, I guess I'll save a few bucks...While price wasnt the only factor, I did think the prices charged by the dealer were quite excessive in this case, which I've heard run anywhere form $32 for the set of 5 up to $45!

WOW!! $1.00!! I paid $2.85 for the FR7DC. I'll have to check my NAPA dealer. On a side note about Champions -- I also belong to the Jaguar internet group and on the XJ-S there are only two major plugs Champion and NGK. The dealer recommends the Champion -- every Jaguar mechanic tells me to stay away from Champions. The recent discussions on the board concern the durability of the Champions. There are many XJ-S's that have had Champions detonate in the engine. My understanding is that the insulator is not well made.
