O2 sensor for 89 740[ALL/1988] posted by Vince Yu on

Hello everyone,
I just purchased a '89 740GL about two weeks ago. Shortly after, the "check engine" light came on. After scanning the brain, it spits out code 232 and 221 which indicates an O2 failure. My question is, can I replace the three-wire O2 sensor with any generic one or does it have to be the exact Bosch replacement? Thanks in Advance!

Vince

First off, you need to determine if you have the Bendix/Siemens system with the ignition coil on the drivers side fender or the Bosch system with the coil (round style) on passenger side near firewall. The O2 sensor is different and not interchangeable between these two.

Vince,
Your problem may not be a defective O2 sensor. The codes you mentioned indicate that the ECU has adapted as much as it can to try to correct a rich or lean mixture. Unless you have equipment and experience ( or good books ) to fault trace, you might come out ahead taking the car to a pro. You could spend a lot more on unneeded parts if you guess wrong a time or two. Some possibilities are fuel pressure regulator, Mass air flow sensor, Eng. coolant temp sensor, ECM, MAP sensor if you have Bendix system, O2 sensor, Bad grounds, bad gas, bad luck, to name a few. Have you noticed any change in engine performance?

Robert is absolutely right. You could spend hundreds of dolars determining you need to take the car to a qualified technician. I can't count the times I've got a car in and see quite a variety of new parts scattered about under the hood.

I say to myself "Well, they're done guessing. Now I get to fix it."

Yup! Just went through this with MY 89 740. Threw parts at it for a MONTH..
O2 sensor codes related to harness fault. O2 sensors ( volvo) are 180.00 a pop.
Tech time is cheap in comparison to possible parts-throwing episodes here.
