Enough Power ?[ALL/1988] posted by Goran Haijenhjelm on

Hi Guys,
I just talked to BSR (A tuning firm here in Sweden, specialized in
Volvo tuning). They just tested their new tuning kit for 850T5.
It delivered 334Hp.....
It includes: New Chip, Rising fuel pressure regulator, 3" Downpipe,
and a bigger cat.
This was of course done with our 98 octane gas...
So if you ever smell burning rubber in your hood, take cover, it might
be a mad 850 driver with all the tuning goddies.

Any idea of whether this ECU will run with 'ordinary' American premium gas with an octane ( (AKI+RON)/2 method ) rating 92? I've read that 13.3 psi or so is the highest boost which can be delivered with 920 Octane when measured this way. So, to get 334 hp, I must assume that the boost is higher than this, which in turn demands higher octane than is readily available here. With the premium gas we have here, and the 13.3 psi of boost you can use, you generally get about 275 hp, such as what I have via my TME designed ECU.

Well, the same amount of boost must be vaild for BSR´s kit also. I doubt
that they have tested with 92 octance since we don´t have lower than
95 here in Sweden.

When you say you dont have less than 95 Octane, I wonder we're talking of the same Octane measurement methods! Here, all 'Octane' is reported as the result of: (AKI+RON)/2 . Here, this has come to mean 'Octane', and is generally the only number used....Is this true of what you refer to as 'Octane'?
Do you know anything of TME in Sweden? Do you know which is preferred, or which sells more ECUS in Sweden: TME or BSR? Here TME distributes through IPD which is a local (Portland Oregon) distributor, and is widely regarded as the best aftermarket source for Volvo enhancements for over 30 years . We generally feel that tremendous benefit accrues to being able to acquire sucn crucial parts as the ECU locally primarily for support reasons. And, of course, the quality is generally beyond reproach!

OK Paul, you got me there ! I don´t know if there are different ways to
measure octane. I only see the numbers when pumping gas into my car.
I´m not a chemist.
And regarding TME or IPD or whatever. I have never been west of England,
so I don´t know anything about your market but I am trying to snap up
pieces here and there.

Word of warning about "Rising rate fuel pressure regulators". They work OK ONLY if you never leave the area/elevation it was calibrated on. They're cheap, MickeyMouse, band-aid fixes for a complex fuel management program. If you live in Montana and drive to Colorado, or to Death Valley, that's what your car will be; Dead.

You really dont have to be a chemist....All our gas stations show the Octane rating forumula right on the pumps! But to talk intellegently about this, you really need to know how the forumula is applied ... its not just a meaningless issue if you want to make sense.... Nevertheless, TME is a Swedish firm , as is BSR...one of the differences though it that the latter is available in the states through a local distributor, whereas the former to date is not....

95 RON in Europe is about 89 AKI here in the US.

I've taken few cars to Europe from California and found out this: Leaded gas is much better in Europe but unleaded is better in the US! An old Caddy was pinging on US 92 leaded but run fine on Euro 88oct (this was when we still had leaded). Unleaded was the opposite; Car would not ping on US 88oct but was pinging on Euro 96 (the highests unleaded available that time). Also, Euro unleaded had less power than US one. The biggest difference was the price, you pay $ 5-6/gal in many European countries! After filling up a '59 Caddy somewere in a little town I felt like doubling their yearly income...

It seems to me the chassis is a limiting factor for usable power.
With 300+ HP how do you keep the tires from spinning (pretty
easy to keep the front tires spining on a stock T5 in anything
but straight ahead acceleration on dry pavement).
Now, if there were some aftermarket goodies to address traction issues
(limited slip?) that would be very interesting.

Ray,
do you own an 850T5, because if you do i would like to suggest the following: bigger swaybars do help on traction considerably comming out of corners. the sway bar will keep tires on ground and straight. Normally you would experience loss of directional control while accelerating if there's spining. with the bar, even spining is kept under control.

Why 334 HP? Because somebody had 315 ! BSR chip reduces power on 1st & 2nd gear to protect weak tranny. Quiffe in England makes Limited Slips for 850. 2nd mortgage to the house should pay it.

Traction? who the heck cares about traction? what about the CV joints? somehow I don't think that Volvo would engineer the joints for that kind of horsepower. Although I do admit that Volvo used to over engineer alot of the stressed components. In this day of cost cutting measures and front wheel drive (yuck!!) cars the thought is generally on the minimum that you can get away with. Give me good ole rear wheel drive anyday.

With many independent suspension setups you still have some
universal joints to contend with. Of course, they are not
as complex since the rear wheels do not normally steer.

How recently did BSR come out with it's 334hp mod? Do you have the address for BSR? I may be interested in picking up a kit on my next visit to Sweden. Have they advertised a price? If so how much. Thanks, Michael Svärd

Hi Michael,
BSR will sell this kit as a 315Hp Kit, when they tested it it delivered
334Hp instead.
You can find them at http://www.bsrab.se
Or phone them +46470779140 (0470-77 91 40).
Talk to Stefan or Rolf, tell them that I sent you ;-)
