heater core problem?[ALL/1988] posted by Alex Hughes on

I think my heater core is leaking. There is a slight coolant smell in car and the windows are fogging up like crazy, all of them. The rear defroster (which I know works) will not unfog the rear window. But there seems to be no less coolant in resevoir tank. So...any other posibility? Underhood appears fine, all clamps good.
-can core be repaired at radiator shop?
-how hard is it to change myself?
-any hints, tips, or tricks?
I've heard it is really labor-intensive, can a do-it-yourselfer do it?
Thanks for all the help folks!

Alex,
Sure sounds like a classic heater core leak. I don't know what kind of a job it is on the 700 series, but before you decide to have it removed you might consider using one of the radiator sealers on the market. I say "consider" because if the flow through your radiator is marginal putting a stop leak additive in it could cause additional blockage. It's a gamble, but such is life. If you decide to try it I would try to work the treatment into a long drive so as to get maximum circulation with the product in the system. Turn the heater on full hot and let it do its stuff. Good luck.

Do noy put any junk into your coolant system except the recommended mixture of antifreeze and h2o as these can cause other problems, with regards to the heater core, Volvo built the damned car around the heater cores and a/c evaporators!! Unless you can be with out the car for a very extended period of time, or you've had some Factory Volvo Training, take it to the shop and let somebody else skin their knuckles!! Part # for heater core is 1307236
