85 245 Turbo loss when engine warms up[ALL/1988] posted by Ted Schabacker on

My 1985 245 GLT runs like a champ until it warms up completly. Then the power drops off until it runs like a dog. The turbo continues to boost (readings in the yellow), but no power. I've changed plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor, fuel filter, and air filter, but alas, to no avail. Compression is good. Has me and my mechanic stumped. Any ideas?

Have you checked the O2 sensor? If it's bad, the "hot" condition would suffer as it doesn't start working until it's fully warmed up. Are you getting excessive black smoke from an over-rich condition or no smoke at all? If you can run the car hard for a bit and then shut down and pull the plugs, you can tell if it's running lean (tan and blistered) or rich (black and sooty).
Is the exhaust system still clear and flowing freely when hot?

The O2 sensor would give more immediate symptoms since it is fully warm well before the engine is.
I think if you do a thorough fuel pressure test, you will find your culprit.

Thanks Bill & Mark. After tracing fuel pressure problems, it turned out to be a faulty fuel pump relay. Replaced the part and it runs great, again!
