V70 Check engine light[ALL/1988] posted by Brace on

Last week my "check engine" light came on for no apparent reason. The gas cap was not loose, and I do not fill up with the car running. The car runs fine, but the light is annoying. I tried resetting it by disconnecting the battery, but that didn't work. Does anyone have any info on reasons for the light to come on and a way to reset it without going to the dealership?
Thanks

My check engine light came on when my wife left the gas cap only partially tightened. I was told by the Volvo dealer that there is no way of resetting the light without going to the dealer.
They are practically correct. By this I mean that you can buy an aftermarket gadget for around $175 to reset it yourself. I'm not an expert here, but my guess is that there wouldn't be a $175 gadget for sale (from IPD) if there was
a cheaper and easy way to do it.
Good luck.

Unfortunately, the worst scene is that you may have an emissions component about
to fail. Most care' systems have the capacity to shut down the engine if the component is critical enough. Please inform us as to your solution and the cost on this one.

I took the car in to the dealership and they reset the light at no charge. The diagnostics read "vapor canister - one incident". Tech said it could have been a glitch. I suppose it could have also been caused by a loose gas cap. The dealership (Winston Salem, NC) was very friendly and allowed me to watch them use the OBD reader.
Thanks for your response

Hum? V70 bought from the dealer? Humm? Probably every component on that puppy is still under waranty!!! Take it back to them and get the problem handled. Do not be afraid of the dealer that sold you the dad-gummed car untill it's out of waranty and only then if they hose you!!!!!!!!!

The "gadget" is for resetting the service light only. The cheapest I have seen them for is about $270. The tool for resetting the engine light is about $3,000.
