Transmission swap, feasible?[ALL/1988] posted by Leon Ramseur on

I have a 1988 740 5 speed and a 1990 740 automatic. I would like to put switch transmisions i.e. put the 5 speed transmission into the 1990 740 and the automatic into the 1988 740. Is this a feasible swap? How about cost? Will both cars be OK after the swap is done? leonramseur@juno.com

You will have to purchase a flywheel with the sensor surface for the 1990 when you fit the manual trans into it. A 1988 didn't have this and it will be needed to make the 1990 run. There are going to be many things that you will find to be done for this swap to be complete, things like changing cruise control pedal switches from one to the other, wiring up the overdrive wiring on the automatic car and tranferring the relay and harness. Unless you are up to doing all this yourself, you may be in for a $1500-2000 expense before it's all done.

If you can't/won't do it by yourself it may cost too much to hire somebody. However, when you got two cars side by side, its not that complicated, just hard labor. You must swap pedals, too. Here, in LA, a good independent shop will do it for around $ 1000. It takes just two days.

They climbed Everest. Men go to the moon. With good enough reasons (and enuf $)
you can do most anything you darn well want to do. For some, "just because" works
well enough.
