1985 240 DL Air Intake, etc.[ALL/1988] posted by Jay Blake on

Netters,

It warmed up enough today in Wisconsin to allow me to start applying some of the excellent information I've received from this forum. I went through the air intake on my newly acquired 85' 244 DL (B230F). The caked on crude was just where you folks told me it would be - all around the butterfly plate which now looks like new. Flame trap was plugged and insulation on the wire to a block installed sensor (coolant?) right above the trap was totally gone. Air mass meter is now clean and element seems OK. Now to the questions: The flapper valve in the air cleaner housing was partially off its at rest position (warm air in) by way of a rock. A small, copper (I'm assuming) temperature responding device with a narrow, moveable plunger lives in there which I believe is responsible for opening and closing the flapper. I placed it in some hot water and then in the snow and the plunger did nothing. Has this troubleshooting method identified this piece as bad? And by the way, what do you call it?

Also, can anyone tell me if the right front fender off an 83' 240GL will fit an 85" 240 DL? PO lost an argument with a guard rail.

Finally, 3 spd auto w/od leaks like a pig. Seal is gone at tailshaft and shaft moves visibly from side to side. What is probability that shaft is OK and bearing and seal will do the trick? Is bearing needle or bushing? Please forgive long post.

Thanks for all your help! Its really paid off!

Jay Blake

Plunger device is "warm up thermostat"? I just replaced mine, flapper valve now closed when engine area is warm. Saved 20% off of dealler price by joining "VCOA" Volvo club of America. Approx. $8.00 savings.
This I understand is an important item in that you can damage the "air flow meter?" on the downstream side.

Have fun.

Yes your diagnostic method is accurate for an air cleaner inlet thermostat. The part number for this is 1266826. A fender from a 1983 is directly interchangeable with a 1985.

The thermostats do go bad. I don't know what dealer prices are but I figured they could not beat IPD at $16.00. Just replaced mine and it works fine. I had a quote from another shop of around $45 for it.
Happy Volvoin'
