Whining re: 850 Turbo whine[ALL/1988] posted by Dan on

Since new my '95 850T has had excessive turbo whine. I've driven turbocharged cars for almost 20 years (Porsche, Supra, Audi, and a Datsun Z I rebuilt and turbocharged) so I'm used to (& enjoy) "normal" noise. However, my 850T wakes sleeping dogs and turns heads in parking garages. My dealer has acknowledged the problem, but has no solution - replacing the turbo did not reduce the noise. The dealer now says the problem may be the intake pipe and nothing can be done. I've driven other '95 850Ts that are acceptably quiet. Anyone have any ideas?

If replacing the turbo didn't affect noise level, then I would say the attention should be given to sound deadening problems that are letting you hear "normal" noise. There might be a sound blanket on inside of firewall that may be missing on your car or something to that effect. I have ridden in a friend's 94 855 turbo and it was not noisy, just a faint whine under high boost and a gasp noise if you let up while engine was revved with high boost.

Thanks for the response. The noise is heard both inside the car and outside. What is strange is that the whine is most pronounced at low boost levels - in fact, when the turbo is just coming on boost and opearating at low boost(according to the guage)at most any engine RPM. Then it seems to spin into an inaudible or just quiet range. The whine is clearly audible over the radio and can be heard outside the car through a closed window (e.g., if my wife drives the 850T, I'll hear the car whining as she accelerates down the street). My dealer admitted that they've had a few other cars that have been as noisey, but that Volvo has no answers. Anyone else had an 850T with anything similar?

Same thing happened on my car ('95 T5).
At approx. 37,000 miles the noise from the turbo started to become more noticeable than usual. Over the next 5,000-6,000 miles it started to become a nuisance and we brought it in for service. At first the dealer didn't want to replace it because they said Volvo wouldn't accept this replacement under warranty. So I wrote a letter to VCNA to bring this matter to their attention. Within a day a got a call back suggesting another trip to the dealer when the regional Volvo mechanic would be in the dealers shop. By the way I had requested a new turbo unit to be installed instead of a remanufactured one.
In the end they accepted the warranty replacement only if I could prove that the oil had been changed. Since I do my own oil changes they of course didn't have any records. Receipts for Mobil 1 and Volvo oil filters were submitted.
After the turbo was replaced there was a noticeable difference in noise level but the noise was certainly not like what it was when new. It is now 8,000 miles since the turbo was replaced and I have concluded that the only way I can drive this car for another 30,000 miles is with a good set of ear plugs. The hoise from the turbo is gradually becoming worse again.

I suspect that a reconditioned unit was put in that wears quicker than the new turbo did when it was new.

The anticipated future turbo problems and the reported automatic transmission failures have "enticed" us to get the extended warranty to 100,000 miles/7 year.

My guess is that VCNA knows exactly what is wrong with the turbo's. It is a matter of persistance and time (and many informed customers).

A remanufactured turbo consists of used non moving parts (inlet housing, exhaust housing, and center housing that holds bushings that turbo shaft rides on) and new pieces for the moving parts and wear parts (bushings, shaft with compressor wheel, seal rings, and turbine wheel). All turbochargers make some noise, and if the sound pads are not right you will hear it. The noise level is also dependent on the boost level, higher boost-higher noise.
