Drooping 740 headliner[ALL/1988] posted by Don Willson on

I thought this only happened on older GM cars. The headliner on my wife's '85 744 and on my '89 765 has begun to droop. I have researched similar problems in my professional life and it is due to deterioration of the polyurethane foam. As a temporary fix I have used the twist in upholstry pins. If placed in a nice well spaced pattern they do not look too bad. Does anyone have a better fix? What replacement cost have you been quoted?

Has anyone been able to lean on Volvo hard enough to get this replaced at no or reduced charge. My contention is that it should NOT happen regardless of the age of the car.

I'm on my 2nd headliner 85 740 wgn. Found 2nd one used for $25. Quoted $800+ for part only from dealer. I agree. It sucks. Have seen posts advising slitting the fabric and using spray adhesive through slits.

Volvo 700 series headliners droop. I have 2 - '85s 1 - '86 and 1 - '87. I purchased all in the last 3 years. Three of four needed new headliners. This weekend, I finished my 2nd headliner job. This time, I even did the sunroof panels too. It is very labor-intensive and a very good thing I work cheap on the weekends. I'm not sure I would have considered doing this job myself if I didn't think I could get better with practice for the next ones.
My local Volvo dealer wanted $607 to buy a new headliner board (includes headliner fabric but not for the sunroof itself)
[I repaired my old busted headliner board.]
One local upholstery shop wanted $450 to do the job.
If you would like more details, e-mail me.

I just replaced the fabric on my headliner on my "87 764turbo. It took several hours, and taking the actual headliner out of and back into the sedan was nearly impossible. It is made of a really soft cardboard like material, and will probably break. I used a fiberglass repair kit to fix the cracks with reasonably good results. Total cost: about US$18.00 (Fiberglass:$10, Spray adhesive:$5, Fabric:$3, and a Saturday morning) I've heard quotes of up to $600.00. Good luck if you attempt to DIY ;)

Mine was drooping on my 740t and i left it for the

longest time. I made the mistake of cutting it, over

the rear seat, and trying to use a spay adhesive.

What a mistake! it looks terrible. I don't mind it

too much since I can't see it in the rear view

mirror. I finally used a staple gun to fix it. It's

not perfect but worth a try.
