1985 244 DL[ALL/1988] posted by Jay Blake on

Netters, I need some help. After a sharp learning curve on an 82'245 DL with 23F, 3 speed auto w/OD, I looked at an 85' 244 DL (205k miles) today which has, I believe, a B230F. This car also has a 3 speed auto w/OD. The body and interior are in very nice condition having spent most of its life in Louisiana. The test drive concerned me. Upon hard acceleration from a panic stop, I hear 1 sometimes 2 clunks from the right hand side - as if someone struck on the rocker panel with a rubber mallet. Noise appears to be to the rear. Under normal braking and hard acceleration, no clunks. PO just had drive shaft carrier bearing replaced. What's of more concern is under moderate acceleration from a slow speed in a right hand turn, I get another noise that you can feel as much as hear - like a tire rubbing on something (there's no evidence of this) or the chatter you get when you go over the rumble strips they cut into the road before stop signs though not as distinct. I have the distinct impression this is drive train related. I don't think I will buy the car if it needs a rear end or trans rebuild as I haven't the time. In my estimation, the body alone is worth the price ($400.00 US). Oh yeah, heater motor is just starting to growl at low speed, boot is torn in half on the steering rack and engine idles too fast when warm. I can handle this stuff. Any thoughts as to the noises I've described?

Tia, Jay Blake

That noise would probably be due to the rear trailing arm bushings needing replaced. They are the ones that remain on the car and require a special tool to remove them and install new ones. There are better ways to spend a weekend, but they are manageable by the shade tree mechanic.
