Brake squeal woes on 240 wagon :([ALL/1988] posted by Eric on

Hello,
I have a 1985 240DL wagon with "ATE" type rear calipers. The car was making a horrible squeal from the rear brakes, so I took out the old pads, sprayed brake cleaner everywhere, and put new pads on with a ton of brake silencer between the metal part of the pads and the piston. The rotors felt smooth to the touch. Alas, when I slapped everything back together, the squeal was still there like nothing had changed. Any suggestions appreciated!

Volvo recommends using silicone coated shims, which of course they sell, between pads and pistons.

When I do mine I take about 40 grit sandpaper and deglaze the rotor surface, then brake cleaner it, and use the metal shims, and the blue anti-squeal goop. I just did my 1987 245DL with ATE calipers in the rear. Guess what? All was well for about 500 miles. I do get a little squeal occasionaly now. It very tempurture and humitity dependent. More so when I'm backing up. That's just the way Volvo 240's are............ Mr. Tool...........

I was also going to say that the shims are important to reduce squeal. New rear brake pads from Volvo include the shims (at least on the 700s). Use Sil-Glyde (or equivalent) on the shims and back of pads.

IPD (1-800-444-6473) sells some anti-squeal pads from Girling. Might give those a try. Also, I've had better luck with the spray-on brake goo that the stuff in a tube. Coat both the shim and the back of the pad and it seems to work well. I've used the Permatex stuff.

I had the same problem on an '87. I finally got rid of that squeal as follows.

I removed all the pads and cleaned the calipers, with special attention to the points where the pad backing plates touch the top of the caliper. With a little high temp grease at the point where the pad backing plate and caliper touch, new anti-squeal shims between pads and pistons, I now have a Volvo the is quiet during braking.

Now I can pull in the driveway and suprise my wife. She doesn't hear me brake for the drive. No dogs barking or anything.
