Don't dare put Dexron in that gearbox!!!!!
It is a type F unit in that year model.
If it has been replaced there will a drain plug with "D-II" on it. If, and only if, it is marked that way are you to put Dexron fluid in it.
Dexron fluids have an additive that allows the clutch linings to slip slightly as an engagement occurs. If it is a dexron trans then the pressure build up during chnages occurs more rapidly and the dexron fluid smooths the shift.
If it is a Ttype F trans then the pressure build up is slower to prevent harshness with the non friction modifier fluid. If you put dexron in it then it will slip too much and rapid wear will occur.
The Dexron change was in 84 on 4 speed autos.
The 3 speed that was used in 84 and 84.5 240 diesels was a 3 speed and it used type f in those last two years.
