red hot exhaust manifold[140-160/1973] posted by Larry on

The two center exhaust ports on my B20f engine get red hot after idling for a short while. While its idling the water temp. is normal, but as soon as I shut the engine down the water starts boiling! I took out the thermostat, replaced the manifold gaskets, adjusted timing, flushed out the radiator. Anyone have any suggestion? Thanks for your input. Larry --

I presume that your car has the D-jetronic fuel injection? My bet would be that either you have some very leaky injector seals, manifold gasket, bad injectors, ground problems, or all of the above that are creating a very lean condition on those cylinders. Do a thorough check of your Fi sytem - including checking injector seals and injector spray patterns. Also take a look at your spark advance setting - should be about 10 BTDC with disto vacuum disconnected and plugged and engine at 750 rpm (requires you to partially block the front of the intake manifold to get it that low). While you can go as high as 14 or so, more advance contributes to higher temps and can result in knock. --
