Emissions Test - 240 turbo[200/83] posted by Steve Seekins on

We recently took one of our 240 turbos in for the new VA emissions test that now uses the dyno to test the car under load. The car failed miserably with high but passable CO, HC readings and a NO reading of the scale at around 3800ppm. A while back I had recommended that one of the readers here try using BG44K to clean up the engine emissions and he reported back that the NO readings went from around 2800 down to 180 or so after use.
I had the same experience - used BG44K this weekend to clean out the fuel system, fuel distributor and injectors, and the car passed with no problem - CO at 0.21, HC at 120, and NO at 180 - all well below the specs - and this on a car that is leaking some oil through the rear turbo seal!

Great news!!!
Steve, I can't seem to get a hold of BG44K in the Great NW (Seattle area). I called the dist. for this area on their web page and no returned calls.
Can anyone help me get this stuff? (NW Volvo (dealer) uses Techron!!!)
Of all the work I've done to the 85 245 Ti, I hadn't messed with the injectors....and while the car scoots, the injector pattern isn't all that great at idle. I have plan$ in the future of replacing all the injector$. (Haven't done an emmisions test, but when I had a "pro" set the idle mixture all were low).
Anyhow the problem I had was sort of an idle "injector miss"....I dumped in a full bottle of Redline fuel injector cleaner. It did three things:
1)Mileage went from 18 to 21 in mixed spirited driving.
2)Idle is smoother. (This is the first time an additive ever helped.)
3)The car scoots even faster.
With the BG44K did you do the "dump in the tank" or the charge through the system method? (If so, how?)
I love Redline products and I recommend their fuel injector cleaner, water wetter and synthetic lubes. But, I still want to dump in a bottle of BG44K. Any clues would be great!!!

Sorry - I can't help you with how to find it there, except to suggest that you contact some of the local independent foreign auto repair shops. You could also try some of the supply houses that support the local independent shops. Also try BMW, Mercedes, VW dealers.
I have found the techron to be largely ineffective in cleaning up a seriously dirty FI system. I suspect that the Redline stuff is very good, though I have never used it. I just dump the BG44K in the tank - have never messed with the direct injection into the fuel manifold - too many expensive tools to get.
If the Redline worked for you , I see no reason to use additional stuff. These heavy duty cleaners should not be used more than 2x/year in any event.

Steve,
Same thing here. Alot of the older 240 and 740 have a high NOx content.
We have been using GM Top Engine Clean with very good success.

Ditto, except I use Mazda Top End cleaner. Probably same stuff.
