Some cars ignition switches are designed to cut off power to many of the accesories when cranking the starter, and then power is restored when the key is allowed to return to the run position.
Also, you have a limiter switch that only allows juice to the starter when in Park. It may just be that your ignition switch is sticking (sometimes) in the start position, and then when you move the shifter to Park, it's engaging the starter and causing a grinding.
In other words, you may be lucky and the whole problem in the ignition switch. I'd start by looking closely there.
