exhaust "resonator"[120-130/66] posted by Erik Miller on

I was wondering if anyone could suggest how I quiet my exhaust system.

The tail piece on my 122 had to be replaced, and I opted for the $40 job at a local shop. He didn't have the little bulbous piece that was orig. in-line on the tail-piece (the "resonator"), and he said I didn't need it.

For those who like a "throaty" sounding car, no prob, but I wouldn't mind a quieter ride now.

Can anyone suggest where I could just buy a resonator, and clamp it (have it welded?) in-line on the tail-piece?

Thanks, Erik M.

Maybe you could find a small "cherry bomb" muffler
at an auto store and get your muffler shop to put
it on. Do you now have 2 mufflers in your system,
or only one?

I gave up on the second and third in Panama because
they never lasted more than 6 months and I didn't
find the noise objectionable, although the 164
certainly has a distinctive sound (unless my wife
is driving it). If you read my old stories posting you
may recall that I ran a 544 with a straight pipe for quite
a while and with restraint, could keep it reasonably
quiet. (Between 2 aircraft hangars at Kelly AFB I
could shake their walls at 12 mph in bottom gear.)

It may be that the muffler(s) you have are too
"straight through". Normally there is one in front
of the rear axle, one across behind the rear axle,
and sometimes the resonator in the tailpipe.
Usually with the first two they are fairly quiet. --

Erik,
The resonator tail pipe is not available from Volvo anymore.
