water on passenger side floor[700/1985] posted by Dan Stephens on

I bought this car a few months back and took it out for the first time in a heavy rain. After about 30 min. of driving I was seeing a small stream of water on the passenger side floor. I have not experienced this on my other Volvo. Is this a design problem that can be fixed or am I looking at a heater core problem that I was not aware of when I bought the car. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. DAN

I have been doing alot of leak detection lately on my 1987 740. As some of the other guys here will confirm there are these black plastic covers behind the trim in each footwell. These covers cover a vent hole, if the seal is no good here then water runs down from the cowl area and seeps into the footwell.
Remove the footwell trim, if it is on side where ECU is you will have to remove ECU as well. Once you do this you will see the black plastic covers and if they have been leaking for a while, the leak should be obvious. I dont think you can remove these covers without breaking them, apparently the part number is 6848804.

If you're impatient, you can pry out the black plastic covers, but you will lightly bend the surrounding sheet metal, making it difficult to reseal with factory parts. However, I attained leak-free status by resealing the original black plastic covers with generous quantities of RTV sealant.

The kick panel thing is true but also there is an air intake in front of the windshield under the grill. This has a gasket in it that was out of place and let water in but it did not go into the AC where it would have drained out. Take the mushroom top off and recaulk the seal.

I am (unfortunately) becoming an expert with regard to water on the passenger (right) side floor of my 1990 740. Removing the footwell trim will give you a start on seeing where the water is coming from. I suggest removing the passenger seat and carpeting and sub-carpeting as you'll want to dry all this out anyhow and it gives you more room to move around in there.
I am slowly closing in on my leak. With the help of a hose I have eliminated those black plastic covers in the footwell area. I did notice water dribbling down around the front of the door seal just about at the same height as the bottom of the glovebox. It looked like it was coming down the inside of the A-pillar trim. I know that the sunroof drains through tubes in the A-pillars but when I poured water into the drip tray of the sunroof it seemed to exit outside the car and not onto the floor.
It was raining this morning and I dug a little deeper. I removed the A-pillar trim and found that water was running into it from along the plastic headliner trim at the very front of the car where the headliner meets the windshield. It is coming across this plastic trim then down the inside of the A-pillar trim and onto the floor.
That's where I am now in my search. I feel that the water is entering the car either via the sunroof seal or at the top windshield seal. That's all that appears to be left. A couple of days ago I taped the sunroof on the sides and rear but I can't get to the front seal because I haven't figured out how to remove the aftermarket plastic wind deflector. But now that I'm close I can train the hose on the top of the windshield without getting any water on the sunroof and that should tell me where the water is entering.
I'll be sure to let you know what the resolution is.
Bob
p.s. any tips on the PROPER way to remove the A-pillar would be appreciated - especially how to remove the molding from the "spring clips" on the vertical portion. The Volvo manual shows them using the infamous "wooden spatula" to pry it off. Normally after I remove (and partially break) stuff like this I can figure out what I should have done but not in this case.

Don't forget to check the a/c drain tube for blockage. A stopped up one can make the passenger side wet.
