Intermittent Starting Problem on 1990 780 turbo[780/1990] posted by Mac Elayda on

The car is a 1990 780 with 137,000 miles. Lately, my daughter had experienced intermittent starting problems. Sometimes it starts fine and sometimes it's hard to start (on various occasions we let the car "rest" and restarted it, and it just started fine). I have been told that it could be due to fuel pump relay, ignition coil, fuel filter. I am no mechanic but I could follow instructions. How could I be definite about a fuel pump relay problem, fuel filter, or ignition coil? Also, where is the fuel pump relay located in this model. I was also told that the ignition coil hardly fails? Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.
Mac

The fuel pump relay should be in the relay center behind the ashtray and all the fuses. Inspection of the relay solder joints may reveal a problem and if it is failing to make contact a sharp rap should get it to kick in, with resulting starting.
I would also look for a corroded contact on the fuel pump fuse(s) and then consider the little Hall impulse unit in the distributer as the problem. A fuel filter might not hurt but I doubt that is the cause of intermittent start and I was told by a dealer that coils rarely fail. I think your mechanic could have been sharper on these points.

Amoung the others listed here... consider also that the check valve
on the front of the main pump might be bad.

To all those that responded to my posting, a big thank you. Robert and Jessi, the fuel pump relay soldering joints had some problems with contact and we soldered it and the fuel pump fuse, indeed, showed a lot of corrosion. The car is working fine now. And to Michael, the check valve in front of the main pump was ok and so does the crankshaft sensor as per suggested by Johnb. Thank you again.

90 Turbos have this on the back of the engine on the bell housing near the top about 11oclock on the passenger side. Held on with on allen bolt.
You check to see if this is working using control function 2 on the integral diagnostic unit. You energize CF2 on the IDU when cranking the engine (obviously during a no-start condition) and if you get a code indicating no impulse sensor signal, replace the sensor. Mine went at 80k.
