I have a 740 turbo wagon. Some times when driving the transmission will shift in to 3rd gear and stay there. the button on the shifter will not turn it off. it will then go off by it self.

Sounds like you are losing your overdrive relay. Try a replacement. I presume that the fluid is in good shape and has been regularly changed. --
