I like Wal-Mart. Can I get oil filters there?[740-760/90] posted by jc on

For years, I've been usin Fram PH16 or equivalent ACDelco oil filters on my 4 cylinder Volvos. When I first got online, I found VCOA tests that made Frams look real bad, and most Fram suppliers (WalMart included) now list a different
oil filter for my 1990 B230FT than the PH16 I was used to buying for my old, normally aspirated 240's. But the Volvo dealers still only sell one filter for ALL Volvos, so I figure that the PH16 and corresponding AC's, STP's etc.( I buy whatever's cheapest) should be sufficient. I change my oil every 2,500 to 3,000 miles and use 15W40 in summer and 10W40 in winter on this 1990 765T with 208K miles, and it has no piston slap or appreciable oil consumption yet. Am I starving this thing of oil flow rate or something using these filters? Maybe Fram thinks so...maybe the VCOA...I just don't know.

These filters are, from the accounts of others, not well-regarded. Your average filter price at Walmart is approximately $2.75. For $4.50 each plus shipping, you can buy three or more Mann filters from Farrell Volvo in Southboro, Mass, or for $4.95 each from IPD. This increment works out to $.0004 per mile at a 5k change. If Walmart were to carry one of the newer premium filters with a size to fit Volvo cars (such as the Mobil 1 filter) I might buy it, but the price is high ($9). --

Why "cheap out"? Volvo filter, bought in bulk, aren't so
expensive. If you want aftermarket, at least stick with
Mann, or NAPA Gold.
