removal of ignition switch?[240-260/83] posted by bob on

Hi
My ignition switch recently died and I purchased one from a salvage yard. I thought I was in for an easy job. It was easy enough to hook up the new one - but the old one is held in place by a couple of bolts that appear to have been snapped off at the factory(security reasons?). The bolts are accessable from the bottom but the tips are rounded and smooth.
Now when I start my car it looks like I'm hot-wiring the thing as people watch me bending over to turn the ignition switch.
Any ideas would be much appreciated...

Bob,
Yes, they are break off bolts, and they are there for security reasons. The bolts have to be removed with hammer and chisel. Believe it or not the bolt are really not that tight . Most of the time a couple of good blows will loosen them. You can then loosen them with needle nose pliers. Note: this is why the dealers charge so much to do this job , it is a pain in the butt.

The electrical part of the ignition switch is very easy to replace. The harness unplugs from the back, and the rotary-switch portion of the assembly fastens to the switch body with two small Phillips-head screws.
It wasn't clear if you're having an electrical problem or mechanical problem with your switch. If you're having electrical problems it might be better to replace only the switch and not struggle with the full assembly. That way you'll keep your original ignition/door key. It's also easier; I did my '82 in about 15 minutes, and I'm assuming it's like your '83.
