To add to ted's answer: the airmix is air that has been diverted above the ditribution case where it can't be mixed with warm air if you have the heat turned on at all. It is put there to give you the ability to cool off the center vent air to achieve a cool air above/warm air below effect. This air has passed the a/c evaporator and is either recirc or outside depending on your selections.
