It may be your car, but at least here in the states, it is Volvo's responsiblity to make sure your car passes the emissions requirements as set forth by our wonderful gov. (poke , poke , pun, pun ). If the gov. somewhere down the road says that the programing has to be changed so be it. I didn't say that someone was going to come to your home and drag you down to your dealer. Besides, sometimes the cars accually run cleaner after installing a chip. A very good friend of mine makes chips right from dyno testing . Some of the chips make the car cleaner at certain rpm's. All the tuners that are out there are in the same pickle. I think GM has been doing it for awhile, that reprograming ECU's with drivability updates and soforth at service intervals. Also I am not saying that the reflash of the chip will change any of the fuel and timing tables in the computer ,
BUT it is possible. If the dealer is acting in good faith by trying to help with some future problem or some kind of drivability problem , I can't see how you can blame the dealer or Volvo. It is to your advantage to let the service dept. know if there is an aftermarket brain in the car for that reason. But then, the other is true,
don't blame the dealer or Volvo if you experience problems with the ECU because you don't want it updated to current programing. With the intro of the new S80 it is even going to be more difficult for the tuners. The new cars are multiplexing there ECU's. The programing for the ECU's comes directly from Sweden via satilite. The modules as they are called have no programing in them.
