Re: Difference between auto and manual[850/1994] posted by K Geeson on

Hello!
There are no diffrents between the -95 turbos regarding gearboxes itīs the same as the -94 turbo. When the T-5R came in -95 the manual gearbox was strengthend and As the -96 R came it was equipped with a diff and a larger turbo. The main diffrents between the aut and man is that all aut Turbos uses the 16T compressor (800, 70) with diffrent wastegates and the man cars uses various. The aut box was first strengthend when the 70R:s came in -97 thatīs why they can handle more tourqe but still the maximum is approx 370 Nm.
Q/A: that is why the 850R is rated at 250HP.
A: The gearbox manifold and clutch was strengthend and they use a diffrent compressor but same turbines to increase the power from 240 - 250 hp. Though the gearbox is the same inside.
855 T 225 hp/300 Nm ,855 R 250 hp/350 Nm (man) 240 hp/300 Nm (aut)
70 T 240 hp/330 Nm ,70R 250 hp/350 Nm (man) 240 hp/330 Nm (aut)
Quote from a letter I sent a few weeks ago regarding: ECU Upgrades-Trouble Ahead?
" Regarding Volvos gearboxes on their T cars I can only say that they are using the same AW-boxes but they donīt use the same manual boxes. The T-5R uses the M56 box and the R uses M58/M59. The new R -96 and itīs M59 gearbox is nearly the same as the M56 except for itīs been strengthen. The M58 is the same as the M56 except for a diffrent valve body. The automatic gearboxes are not as strong as the M boxes and I have heard that you should not use more than 360-370 Nm in this box due to the fact that you canīt restrain the torque on the low revs as you can in the manual itīs the high torque on low rpm thatīs the danger for any gearbox. About the increase of power in the T-5, T-5R and R-cars...the T-5 and T-5R uses the Mitsubishi TD04HL-15G turbo with a 150/40 wastegate and thats a small compressor. The R and S70 T-5 uses Mitsubishi TD04HL-16T with a 218/60 wastegate, these cars use the same turbines but diffrent compressors to be able to increase the power from 240 -250 hp without exceeding the maximum rpm on the turbo. Youīr talking about the increas of powewr in the LPT engines, why they only can increase the power up to approximatrly 230 hp is that the turbo is too small, the gearbox though is no problem due to it is the same as the T-5:s. Remember also that the T models was made smaller to 2.3 liters due to the fact that it needed more cooling and the LPT uses the 2.5 litre engine. Donīt always be blinded on the hp figures, often the hp and torque follows but more torqe is preferable than power. I personaly a bit sceptic to upgrading the ECM, what happens when something goes wrong? I would be satisfied with a larger exhaust and drive safely... remember that you obvious can have a lot of power under the bonnet if you use it sensible."
