I had a similar problem with my 87 240, the wires on the back of the altenator actually shorted accross the oil filter (For some reason the plastic coating had melted off) I know its wierd, and I was running on battery power, producing the same effect as the one you were recieving. Replaced the wires to the altenator. And running like a charm now. Good Luck.
