Water Pump[140/1969] posted by Keith Korbut on

I have run into a problem with my 1969 144S waterpump. My pump has the clutch fan installed on the front hub with one allen bolt and a washer. The flange on the original pump has a large snout that centers the clutch fan on the hub. My problem is this style is no longer made and all the replacement pumps are the
flat flange with four threaded holes. I guess my choices are remove it all and install a electric fan, or convert to the early style 122 fan which is smaller and a fixed blade type. Has anyone run into this ? And what was your fix.

PS
I really want to keep this low milage car original and don't like the electric fan idea. Maybe someone has a new or rebuilt waterpump out there in the garage that I could purchase?

I recently changed the water pump and hoses on my 73 1800es and had the same problem. In the IPD catalog it explains that none of the new water pumps have the single mounting bolt for the fan and suggest purchasing a four bolt fan from a junk yard. I spoke with Stephane at www.volvoworld.com and he had a clutch fan with an adapter. I ordered a the new fan which turned out to be the same as mine only with an adapter that fits on the end of the new water pump to convert it from the four bolt mounting to a single bolt for the fan. Everything went back together easily, except that now I have an extra cluth fan with the single mounting hole.
Good Luck,

That adapter was on '71 142s. If you can't find a used one, get a new one from Volvo.
