There is a whining on my just-purchased wagon that has been diagnosed as
a simple alternator belt. the whining increases with an increase in rpms,
and is constant when driving. does this sound like a reasonable diagnosis?
is it farily inexpensive?

Better check the 3 bushings on the alternator! These wear out and cause big alignment problems - put on a new belts! Check the brushes at the same time!
