940 SE ignition problems[940-960/91] posted by John Ellis on

Looking for any information that may lead to our solving an intermittent problem with our 940SE. For some time now, approximately two months, we have been experiencing the following:
- Engine will act as if it is missing, promoting a lack of power, etc. while at the same time the tach begins to drop abruptly. Then, power picks back up, then down. This will go on for just a second or two, or continue until the engine dies.
- Until recently, we were able to keep the car running by letting it idle then moving on. Sometimes if it died completely it would restart without any problems.
- Once restarted may run for weeks without any more problems, (whcih is happening right now after I had to tow it to my mechanic).
- The tach seems to be a common link. When the engine dies and can't be restarted the tach doesn't move at all. But an indication the car will start is when the tach moves on crank start up.
I have a 2.3L B230FT engine. Any help would be appreciated.

940 se w/ b230ft w/LH2.4 and EZ116K ignition:
If the tach is dying concurrently with engine miss or stall then you likely have (in this order) 1) faulty crankshaft speed sensor (immediately behind upper bock reading fly wheel through hole in "bell housing" part of block.
2) power stage unit adjacent to battery, gray/black bolted to inner fender panel. This unit gets commands from ignition computer (after it gets signals from crank sensor to know when to fire coil) at low wattage and ampliifies them to ignition coil wattage requirements.
Of course, faulty connections at either of these units or their applicable control unit connections would be first things to be verified before component replacement.
