Chris,

Volvo motor mounts are known for their periodic need for replacement. Not sure why. Maybe it's the way they are designed. They sit at a slight slant. That way in the event of a head-on, the motor goes down and back, not straight into the passenger compartment.
I had to replace all 3 on my 1980 DL at 145,000 just this last year. They looked fine but when you pushed the engine, you could tell they were sheared through.

You need to check your mounts for cracks in the rubber that are more than just surface cracks. The fact that you can move the motor is, by itself, no indicator of a problem. 4 cylinder mounts are soft so as to not pass engine vibrations into car excessively and new mounts may not be needed based on just a shake test.

Re: engine/tranny mounts too tight?[240-260/86] posted by Mark on

When I first bought my car, I took it to the Volvo garage to have them make sure there were no safety problems. Mechanic said that the tranny mount had been replaced with an engine mount. He put in the proper mount. It seems to transmit more vibration now than original. New vibrations in dashboard at certain rpms, etc. Looked at the mount the other day and noticed that the nyloc nut is really tightend down, deforming the rubber mount. Is it possible to get the mount too tight so that it transfers more vibration than it should? I assume that the fasteners to the block/tranny are completely independent of the fasteners to the frame, hence the vibration isolation. Any thoughts on whether the mount can be improperly tight?

Both the engine and thr tranny mounts have metal plates with rubber sandwiched between. The bolts do not extend through the mount, but only fasten the metal end plates to the frame/tranny, engine. So these cannot be 'too tight'. Rather, yours may be a little stiffer than the original to solve a problem where they were too soft. You might wish to verify that you did, in fact, get the correct mount for your tranny.

Yes, verify to see if it is the correct mount. Also, the mount should not be deformed (twisted), this will lead to premature failure because of undue stress. It will also reduce the bounce of the rubber.
