Every time my wipers wipe there's a creaking noise under my dash. Solutions?

It may just need some oil on the joints. More seriously, the shaft to the outside may be starting to bind. I think it is due to corrosion, and contrary to what we'd think as logical, the shaft starts to get very tight in the sleeve. I've had to change the whole mechanism on one side. The other one is still okay. You may be able to tell whether the shaft is binding by how hard it turns.

Here is a fix from the Volvo Problem Solver

Remove the nut, wiper arm and rubber grommit

Drill a 1/8th inch hole in the housing at a downward angle, DO NOT DRILL INTO THE SHAFT!

Spray a good lube (CRC or the like) into the hole

Move shaft up/down while wipers are on to work lube into the shaft and loosen the rust.

Put engine oil or Grease into the hole for long term saturation.

Plug hole with caulk, chewing gum, etc.

Reassemble.

For the "TWANG" sound try lubing the arm hunge, the spring attachment points, and the pivot points with a thick lubricant.

You can also try removing the glovebox and doing same to relay point where the cam and arm meet behind the dash. Just use sparingly and be sure to put a plastic bag underneath to catch any drips.

I had similar wiper creak problems a few years ago. Genius that I'm not, I had isolated it to the left wiper shaft when the blade was down (only under load I figured). Crude attempts at external lubrication of the shaft did seem to make a temporary difference. I've got the Volvo Problem Solver book too and was all psyched up to do the fix that Stoney suggested when my brother asked if I'd ruled out the wiper arm spring which he'd easily isolated as a creak source on his Brick. A flick of the wiper arm, a couple squirts of grease, end of problem. So definitely try the simple stuff before moving on to wiper assembly surgery.
