There should be a spark while the engine is cranking. Your condition could be due to several causes.
First - you need to do the electrical system maintenance task. Clean and treat all fuses/holders, unplug and clean all underhood connectors and treat with dielectric grease, unfasten, clean and refasten ground leads - especiallly those bolted to aluminum intake manifold. If there is lots of high resistance corrosion in the elecrical system, the ignition unit may not be getting sufficient voltage to operate while the starter is running.
Check you battery, battery terminals, and battery/engine ground straps.
Check your fuel pump relay - gets hold closed signal while starter is running, then gets signal from coil to keep closed. If this starter signal is missing, you will not get fuel pump or ignition while cranking.
