Auto trans Question[240-260/80] posted by Geoff on

I have a 1980 245 with the 3 spd auto transmission. Its a fine trans, but when traveling at high speeds, the engine seems to be reving much higher then I would like it to be. I know some cars were equiped with a 3 spd + OD. I was wondering if these OD's were avaliable, and if they would easily attatch to my current transmission. If not, how hard would it be to convert to a 4spd manual?

I think you need an O.D. transmission. You can do the swap or possibly change your diff. gear (if possible). I changerd my mom's 1977 245 3-spd with a "turbo" O.D. trans. for about $500 including related parts.

Good luck,

although your 3 spd box is the foundation of a 4 spd, you can't simply attach the OD unit as it requires a whole host of different internal parts. As the other reply indicated, you do an exchange. It will require a shorter driveshaft that you should get from the donor car, as well as the wiring and relay be added from the donor car. Also the shifter linkage rod is shorter on a 4 spd box, so get that too.
