Fast Idle[240-260/1984] posted by Alan Gondry on

It seems that my 245 will run fast during hot and dry times, like yesterday. 81 degrees F. Usually I find a disconnected or cracked vacuum line. Yesterday was not as fruitful. I have recently replaced the O2 sensor. Has anyone else experienced a sparatic change in idle, possibly associated with temperature??

Any thoughts??

Alan

Sporadic idle has to be a leak in your air intake system.

A way to find one is to take either something flammable or something that will choke out combustion and spray it around the intake manifold and related parts. When the engine starts to respond, you have found it. Oh yeah, try spraying on each injector seal too (they sell these at IPD and RPR I'm sure...and they are easy to deal with).

Also, you should tell us what fuel system you have (if you know...some brickboard users can deduce but others can't from year of model). On my 240 '79, there is this thing called a CPR (continuous pressure regulator?) and it got all gunked up AND the hose was broken in a very inconspicuous area (prepare yourself for a ridiculous price for these hoses if this the problem or do what I did and rig something out of copper plumbing elbows and cheap hose...the Ukranian in me). You can take the CPR off and see if the little crescent is opened properly. Regardless of the results (with goggles) spray some carb cleaner in there and use a pencil eraser to snap the vavle back and forth. If the thing is not a sliver/crescent shape loosen the little tiny tiny nut on the top of the unit and push it to the side (away from the center) and reattach when a crescent opens up. Put some Silicone spray in there after using the carb cleaner.

Just some ideas. It really could be a number of things. Keep us informed.

Good Luck,
