I think Volvo "addressed" this problem by discontinuing the 16 valve GLE. When I was looking for my first Wagon a while back, I read somewhere that the 16 Valve engines could self-destruct if the timing belt broke. I'm not sure about the shaft problem unless it is directly related to a broken timing belt. Hondas, as well as a few other makes, can also suffer the same death if the timing belt breaks. Obviously, this should not have happened to you if you followed the Volvo service schedule and I would hope and think Volvo would help you out with a "good faith" gesture given your situation. If you don't have any luck through the dealer, contact Volvo directly. Please let us know what happens.
