Engine Dies after starting when cold[240-260/1986] posted by Randy on

I have a 1986 240DL. Automatic transmission.Approx 190K miles. When we start it up in the morning and it is cold, it will run for a few seconds and then die. Usually two or three starts before we can make it run. I work on these cars myself, although the fuel injection scares me. I have just replaced both fuel pumps and the fuel pressure regulator to remedy an earlier problem(noisy fuel pump). Fuel filter was replaced at that time also. Are there any simple checks that I can do without taking it to someone? What shuld I do first?

My '85 with 184k had a similar problem. It would die after starting and put into gear when cold and Idle was not stable.
Here's what I did to fix it.
Replaced all vaccum hoses and checked for vaccum leaks.
Removed and cleaned air control valve.
Removed and cleaned throttle body in carb cleaner, replaced all gaskets.
At this point it was running better but not perfect.
Adjusted throttle body linkage and throttle positon sensor per the book.It has to be done in sequence.
Ran a can of BG44K thru the tank to clean up intake valve and fuel system deposits.
Car now runs very strong,
There's a TSB on cold start problems for the B230F with auto that applies if the problem is at 60 degrees are so. It's an added control unit for the computer
that changes the choke factor at certain temps. My car didn't need it. It's about 150$ at the dealer.
Alot of times these problems are an adjustment, cleaning, wiring problem or vacuum leak. Just make sure you have checked the obvious things. Go to the archives and search for this problem. Lots of good stuff there.
Good luck,
Roy
