Front Oil Gasket and Crankshaft Seal[740-760/88] posted by Robert on

I will be changing the timing belt on our 740t wagon with 160,000 mile this coming week and wondered the following:

1. If anyone would have tips on changing the front oil gasket and Crankshaft seal. The lower front has always been oil soaked and now that the timing belt is being changed I though I would tackle this too. I have cleaned the nipple on the intake and the oil still leaks in the front.

2. Has anyone changed the o-ring on the breather box for this model? Does the oil return pipe drop right into the engine if the box is removed? Does the intake mainfold need to be remove to get at this breather?

Any tips or advice would be appreicated?

Replacing the front seals on the camshaft, crankshaft and intermediate shaft is pretty straightforward. You can pry them out CAREFULLY with a screwdriver. Volvo sells a set of drivers to reinstall the new ones, but I fabricated a set out of PVC couplings and a 4" piece of flatiron strapping. You'll immediately know what I did once you get into the project. Timing belt and all seals should'nt run over $30.
